The Formula for an Exact Age Gap

An age gap is simply the difference between two people's dates of birth, expressed in years, months and days. Because the gap between two fixed dates never changes, you don't need to reference today's date at all — just the two birth dates.

1. Work out which date of birth is earlier. That person is older, and their date of birth becomes the starting point.

2. Subtract the earlier date of birth from the later one. Using the same year/month/day borrowing method as a normal age calculation.

3. The result is the exact, constant age gap. Between the two people, expressed in years, months and days.

A Worked Example

Person A was born June 3, 1988. Person B was born January 21, 1995.

Years: 1995 − 1988 = 7. Months: January (1) − June (6) is negative, so borrow a year (7 becomes 6) and add 12 months: 1 + 12 − 6 = 7. Days: 21 − 3 = 18, no borrowing needed.

Result: Person A and Person B are exactly 6 years, 7 months and 18 days apart.

Why Age Gaps Feel Different at Different Life Stages

A five-year gap between two ten-year-olds is enormous in relative terms — it's half of the younger child's entire life. The same five-year gap between two fifty-year-olds is barely noticeable, at just one-tenth of their age. The absolute gap never changes, but its relative weight shrinks every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I calculate the exact age gap between two people?
A: Subtract the earlier date of birth from the later one, the same way you'd calculate a single age — the earlier date becomes the starting point, the later one the target.
Q: Does an age gap change over time?
A: No — the gap in years, months and days stays constant throughout both people's lives, even though it can feel larger or smaller at different life stages.
Q: Is there a free calculator for this?
A: Yes, Agevly's Age Gap Calculator gives the exact gap in years, months and days instantly, along with a 'half your age plus 7' dating-rule check.
Q: What's an 'Irish twin'?
A: An informal term for siblings born less than twelve months apart, meaning the older sibling isn't yet one year old when the younger one arrives.
Q: Can I calculate an age gap for people who aren't alive anymore?
A: Yes — the calculation only needs both dates of birth, so it works just as well for historical or genealogical research.
