Blowing out candles, making a wish, eating cake — these feel timeless. But the modern birthday is a surprisingly recent invention.

Ancient Origins

The earliest celebrations come from ancient Egypt around 3,000 BCE — marking not the birthday of a person but the coronation of a pharaoh into godhood. Romans were the first to celebrate ordinary people, but only men.

The Modern Birthday

The birthday party as we know it crystallised in Germany in the late 18th century through Kinderfest. The song Happy Birthday to You was written in 1893 by Mildred and Patty Hill.

The next time you blow out a candle, you are completing a ritual with roots stretching 5,000 years — from pharaohs to Greek gods to a schoolteacher in Kentucky.
